Course Description

Migration is frequently addressed across a range of discourses - those involving religious tolerance, racism and xenophobia, human rights, and civil society, as well as the economic and political impacts of population movement. This course explores how migrant communities integrate into host societies, the social and economic challenges they face, and their ties to the homeland (return movements). Emphasis is placed on theoretical models that analyse migration and diaspora phenomena, while exploring issues such as the formation of ethnic and cultural identities, gender and migration, the reproduction of stereotypes, political and socioeconomic integration, cultural syncretism, and writing in the language of the “Other.” The course gives special focus to Greek migration and diaspora, particularly in the United States, Australia, and Germany, and places special emphasis on migration cinema and documentary film.
